A Conversation with Gayatri Kalra Sehgal
Tell us about yourself.
I was born in an army family. I travelled across the nation and was educated where my father got posted. Each time my father got posted to a different place, I got unique opportunities to adequately explore the diverse culture and precious heritage of India.
Presently, I conduct seminars and share valuable information with parents, educators, curriculum designers. I conduct ‘Train the Trainer’ programs and mentor entrepreneurs wanting to set up preschools with a dynamic approach towards the curriculum.
How did you begin to write?
When I started teaching preschoolers, I felt the pressing need to understand each child at his or her level of understanding. I also felt that the curricula needed to be re-focused to be ‘child-led’ rather than ‘teacher-led’ to nurture and keep their love for learning alive. This was possible only when parents and teachers were ‘sensitized’ with deeper knowledge and profound understanding about the child.
The urgent need to bridge the increasing gap between the facilitator and the learner required immediate action. It required progressive and positive efforts from our side to raise children in a nurturing and safe environment to promote an atmosphere rich in respect, gratitude, self-discipline, self-reliance, responsibility and leadership. But if we were to instill all these aspects of learning under one umbrella, it would be under the giant umbrella of ‘love.’ This insight marked the turning point which made me resign as a Dean and put pen to paper. I experienced the urgent need to share this insight with the world so that the focus from score-based results was shifted to a deeper and profound understanding of learning.
What aspects do you try to bring out in Being A Brilliant Thinker: Mastering Intelligent Thinking Skills?
Being a Brilliant Thinker fosters intelligent thinking in a child. Intelligent thinking is developed and enhanced by mental effort, intellectual consistency and focused practice; and hence, it is a necessary skill to make a child future-ready.
The book offers insight to develop intelligent thinking and helps to achieve specific learning goals. It proposes 75 different situations which may happen in real life. Parents can bring these situations into their daily conversations so that when the child actually faces these situations in real life, he or she is confident and in complete control of the situation.

While asking questions, we must encourage the children to take risks, even when they are wrong, help them challenge their ideas and reflect on their tasks. We will need to remember if the child has learned hundreds of facts but hasn’t developed the ability to explore the possibilities, most of the acquired information is wasted.
