Introduction To Space Dynamics (Dover Books On Aeronautical Engineering) was published during the period that closely followed the launch of Sputnik. The fundamental principles described in this book are as fascinating today as they were then. The problems that these principles can be used to solve have changed, however and the increased use of various computational devices has made calculation faster. However, this book is still a valuable guide to students of aerospace engineering at any level of study.
The first two chapters of this text discuss vector algebra and kinematics, including angular velocity vector, tangential and normal components and the general case of space motion. The third chapter covers the transformation of coordinates, with sections of Euler’s Angles and the transformation of angular velocities.
Chapter four discusses various problems involving the motion of satellites and other space vehicles. Problems like the two-body problem orbital change due to impulsive thrust, long-range ballistic trajectories and the effect of the Earth’s oblateness.
Chapters five and six describe gyrodynamics and the dynamics of gyroscopic instruments. These two chapters cover the displacement of a rigid body, the precession and nutation of the Earth’s polar axis, oscillation of the gyrocompass and inertial navigation.
Chapter seven examines space vehicle motion, with analyses of general equations in body conditions and their transformation to inertial coordinates, attitude drift of space vehicles and variable mass. The eighth chapter deals with the optimisation of the performance of single stage and multistage rockets
The ninth chapter is an overview of holonomic and nonholonomic systems, Lagrange’s equation for impulsive forces and missile dynamics analysis and other generalised theories of mechanics.
All the chapters are accompanied by practice problems, diagrams and charts, to help enhance the studying process. This book was authored by William Tyrrell Thomson. He also wrote Theory Of Vibrations With Applications. Introduction To Space Dynamics (Dover Books On Aeronautical Engineering) was published by Dover Publications Inc. in 1986 in a new edition and is available in paperback.
